Where have all the chairs gone?

The Region has donated a bench to the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in response to the Where have all the Chairs Gone? campaign.

A ceremony to recognise this donation was held in Llangollen on the 8th July 2009 with members and friends from across the Region attending. The Region was delighted that the Eisteddfod President, Terry Waite, was present to receive the bench on behalf of the Eisteddfod Committee from Past Region President, Mair Jones, from SI Bangor and District and he thanked the Soroptimists for their generosity.

The bench has a bilingual plaque stating that it has been donated by Soroptimists. It also has a plaque in memory of Linda Bond, who was the originator of the campaign, and her family were in Llangollen for the presentation. Linda Bond, from the Nantwich and District club realised that people were trapped in their homes because there were insufficient places to rest if they wanted to go to the shops. The campaign was first adopted by her club and later became the Regional project, and has been run in partnership with the charity, Age Concern.

Clubs in the Region surveyed a number of towns to establish where seating - and gaps - existed. Also surveyed were the positions of public seating in relation to sheltered and elderly people’s housing and the shops. An interim report entitled “Where Have All the Chairs Gone?” was published and has been used to successfully lobby for better seating provision in the region. The project has taken three years and the final report will be available shortly.

The Jacob's Well Appeal

Members have been making donations of unused medicines, medical supplies and blankets to this appeal for the last three years and approximately two car-loads a year are delivered to their base in Beverley, Yorkshire. Members have now been asked to collect professional scientific and medical journals (previously collected for the St. Petersburg Project).
