SI Garstang
Anti-Traffiking display
The club mounted a display to raise awareness on Trafficking using material from the Purple Tear Drop Campaign and Stop theTrafik. It was part of an Alternative Christmas Gift Fair at the Garstang Methodist Church at the beginning of December.
It was the T shirt's second airing; the first was for the Anti Slavery Walk in Lancaster in 2007, when members of SI Garstang joined other Soroptimists from the region on the walk.
Peace Display
A Peace Display was mounted at Garstang Library to mark the UN Peace Day on 21 September. It was on show for a week.
In the left foreground can be seen a booklet, compiled by members of the club, with their thoughts on Peace. Members of the public were invited to take away one of the candles and light it to mark the day.
Club's Programme work
SI Garstang are keen to keep up the Programme Action work in their area. To that end there are a number of initiatives underway.
Working in conjunction with the local Rotary Club they will continue to fill aqua boxes.
Their 'Send a Cow' Project has proved very successful and so in this club year they are working on fundraising projects to send another cow to help a family.
The members of SI Garstang have trained as mentors to work in schools and are all CRB checked and are enthusiastic members of a literacy project in the local school.
As you may know Garstang was the first Fair trade town in the world and Garstang Soroptimists have been actively involved in this work and have worked for many years on the thorny issue of plastic bags. The club intends to look into the possibility of producing cloth bags which they can then distribute in the town. Watch this space on this project.
Claire Bailey one of members is heavily involved in Human Rights and The Status of Women and is acting as the Programme Co-ordinator for this area at the Regional level. The club is very interested in the 'Dignity Period' work going on and this is a project they feel they could be getting into in the coming months.
