The Big Clean Up

Cannock - V Festival 1

Walsall member Barbara Housihaux

On Tuesday 25th August members of SI Cannock and SI Walsall went along to help with the grand ‘clear-up’ at Weston Park following the very successful V Festival.

Wearing wellies and other appropriate clothing, members set to to dismantle and pack tents, let down and roll up air beds, and collect chairs, buckets, bowls, sleeping bags, unopened tinned food – and anything else left behind by the revellers that was in good condition and might be of use to others.

Members collected items for Pathway and The Haven, two local refuges for women victims of domestic violence; for a Walsall charity group which takes youngsters away on camping holidays [the children’s only holiday] and for International Aid.

The clear-up goes on over two days and is organised by Rotary International. It is a true example of organisations working together and giving service to help others. All the Soroptimists who went along thoroughly enjoyed the experience and know that those who receive the goods will be more than grateful.

Organising the Jar and Ball game

On Sunday 9th August SI Cannock & District supported the Dragon Boat Event at Chase Water, organised by the Rotary Club of Cannock. The aim of the event is to raise funds for many charities and provide an excellent day out for families.

Seven club members provided a “Lost and Found” base for children (which luckily wasn’t needed, though one or two parents offered to provide some lost children for us!), they ran a refreshment stall and Soroptimists Eileen Cryer and Lakhwinder Thompson organised children for the Jar and Ball game.

£130 was raised by SI C&D which will go to the four local charities being supported by the club this year: Citizens Advice Bureau; Young Carers; Newlife Foundation; Alzheimer’s Society.
