International Women's Day

Bridge E

Nearly a hundred London Anglia Soroptimists marked the centenary of International Women’s Day by creating a ‘human poster’ on a bridge across the River Cam.

They were supporting the No Women No Peace campaign by illustrating the demand that peace teams should contain at least 40% women and highlighted the point by turning blue men depicted on cards into pink women.

The members broke from their quarterly business meeting at Newnham College, Cambridge, to rally on Silver Street Bridge near the city centre. They are currently lobbying MPs to press the government to put women’s participation in peace-building on the global agenda by implementing resolution 1325.

Malawi Schools Project

London Anglia - Garda

The old school building

A simple idea, but one that has mushroomed. Three years ago, then Regional President, Ineke Morris, gave each club £20 and asked them to increase it by any (legal!) means they could.

John and Doena Pendered farm two parcels of land in Malawi; Garda, which they own and Likasi, which they rent. The Regional Project is aimed at helping both areas. At Garda, funds raised have enable the building of a brick classroom for approximately 80 local children and also provide an adult literacy and learning room. The money raised enabled the building materials to be purchased, but the actual construction work was carried out by the parents.

At Likasi, there was a school building in existence already, which approximately 250 children attended. The money raised provides books and other much-needed stationery for these children.
