Bras in the Bay (at the Cardiff Conference)

London Anglia - Cardiff Bay

London Anglia Region members in Cardiff Bay

About 20,000 bras of all shapes, colours and sizes, were handed in at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay on Saturday 31 October.

They will be presented to Oxfam for its Fairtrade project in west Africa, and it is hoped that this will set a world record for the largest number of bras donated at any one time to a charity.

The bras will be sent to Oxfam’s Wastesaver textile sorting centre in Huddersfield, from where clothes, including bras, are sorted for resale around the world. Wastesaver currently sells bras to wholesalers in developing countries, such as those in Senegal who sell the bras on to local traders and small companies who sell them to local women, thus providing employment opportunities and meeting the needs of local people, particularly women.

Oxfam and Soroptimist International GBI will be working in partnership to collect the greatest number of bras ever.

Soroptimist International members are committed to improving the lives of women and girls, so the partnership with Oxfam enables them to make a difference to lives of many, from the small traders who are mainly women to the women who are able to buy bras at a fair price.

Malawi Schools Project

London Anglia - Garda

Children at Garda, where a school is being build

A simple idea, but one that has mushroomed. Two years ago, then Regional President, Ineke Morris, gave each club £20 and asked them to increase it by any (legal!) means they could.

John and Doena Pendered farm two parcels of land in Malawi; Garda, which they own and Likasi, which they rent. The Regional Project is aimed at helping both areas. At Garda, funds raised will enable the building of a brick classroom for approximately 80 local children and also provide an adult literacy and learning room. The money raised will enable the building materials to be purchased, but the actual construction work will be carried out by the parents.

At Likasi, there is a school building in existence already, which approximately 250 children attend. The money raised will provide books and other much-needed stationery for these children.
