Amber Valley - Meningitis presentation

£7,000 cheque being presented

Lions, Rotary and Soroptimists working together for a local charity

On Friday 25 May, four of Amber Valley's major organisations joined forces to raise money for the Edward Bright Appeal.

Edward is eight years old and has an identical twin brother, William. Edward recently contracted the rare and serious Y-strain meningitis and subsequently lost both legs and both his arms below the elbow, together with serious damage to a large proportion of his skin.

The Edward Bright Charity Night, to raise funds for a wheelchair for Edward, was organised by Ripley Amber Valley Lions Club, the Rotary Club of Amber Valley, the Rotary Club of Ripley and Soroptimist International of Amber Valley. It took place at the Derbyshire Police Headquarters, by kind permission of the Chief Constable, David Coleman.

The night was attended by over 350 people and the format was basically a race night which was sponsored by local businesses. During the evening an auction was held raising £950.00 and the Soroptimists organised the Raffle which raised £852.00.

The evening was attended by the Bright family, the Chief Constable and his wife, and the former Mayor & Mayoress of Amber Valley. During the evening local business man, Mr Tim Godkin, presented the Bright family with an all expenses paid holiday to his luxury villa in Portugal.

The whole event was a huge success and raised £6,972.00 for the appeal.

Amber Valley Soroptimists, together with the Lions and Rotary clubs come together again to produce the Meningitis Trust's new symptoms awareness card. Members will be distributing posters, information leaflets and the symptom cards to key areas in Ripley, including the leisure centre, library, medical centres and to all primary schools in the area. The president of the Ripley Rotary club, Stuart Rice, said "This life-threatening infectious disease kills more children under five than any other infectious disease."
