Safeguarding Children Boards
Nationwide coverage
There are branches of the Safeguarding Children Board in many areas of the UK. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a national website with links to different Boards across the country so we recommed that you 'Google' Safeguarding Children Board followed by your county and see what that displays. If anyone has found the national hub do please let us know!
SI Derby discovered that the Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Board made no mention of FGM on their website or annual report and compiled a letter urging them to add FGM to their programme. Soroptimists can download a copy to use as a template if they find their own SCB is not covering this topic.
London FGM resource pack
On November 26th 2009, the London Safeguarding Children Board launched the London FGM Resource Pack at the Globe Academy in Southwark. This innovative pack brings together a wide range of existing work into one handy document for the first time, and will be a key tool to help professionals and community groups work together to combat FGM.
The pack is designed for all people who work with children, but especially midwives and other health professionals, teachers, social workers and police officers.
It contains detailed information about FGM, as well as guidelines on how to spot victims of abuse or girls at risk. These include a set of questions for midwives to ask women attending their clinics. There is also advice on how community groups can help to prevent FGM, and information to help professionals discuss the issue with parents and children. The pack many be downloaded from their website:
