SI Cwmbran and District
Health and Well-being Exhibition
The club celebrated International Women's Day by organising a Health and Well-being exhibition at the Congress Theatre in Cwmbran Town Centre in partnership with the Local Authority, Torfaen Local Health Borad, Gwent Health Care NHS Trust and the Voluntary Sector
The object of the day was to encourage women to follow a healthy life-style, to improve their education, improve their self-image, widen their horizons and take advantage of the opportunities available to them in the community. A crèche was organised by 'Sure Start'. Kemi Nevens (an Assembly nominee) skilfully chaired the morning session.
Stalls were organised in the form of a 'market place', promoting child-care opportunities and facilities, healthy eating, education courses for those who had missed out on their education, smoking cessation, sexual health, Fair Trade and many others. Nominations were requested for 'Torfaen Woman of the Year' and the winner was presented with a prize of a 'pamper day' at a local hotel.
Women who had risen to the top of the career ladders spoke about how they achieved their goals in the categories of Women as Leaders, Women in Health, Women in Politics and Women in Management.
The idea for the day was the brain-child of Joy Price who is a non-executive Director of the Local Health Board as a Soroptimist representing the voluntary sector. She persuaded fellow members of the Health Board to back and sponsor the day, which they did with enthusiasm. 'Retired' members of the Cwmbran club manned a Soroptimist stall and acted as stewards. Regional President, Dee Jenkins, attended in the afternoon. The club was very proud of Joy, her hard work and what she achieved on the day.
