KARMA NIRVANA
Karma Nirvana means peace and enlightenment. It was named in the hope that their work would make a positive impact on the lives of individuals who would, by their involvement, achieve a sense of peace and ultimately enlightenment.
Jasvinder Sanghera is the founder member and established the project from her front room with a view to creating a support project for women who experienced language and cultural barriers. Jasvinder is herself a survivor of a forced marriage her sister, Robina, committed suicide as the only way out of a horrific marriage.
Karma Nirvana is a registered charity based in Derby and of national significance. The majority of the team are survivors of forced marriages or honour-based violence. Jasvinder shared her experiences with victims in the hope that many more would come forward - they did in droves! They now deal with 15 new cases a week and receive over 200 calls a month requesting support.
