Aid for St Basil’s

St Basil’s is one of the largest agencies in the United Kingdom working with young people, aged 16-25, who may be at risk of homelessness or who are actually homeless. St Basil’s helped over 1,000 young people in Birmingham last year. A starter box is given to each young person when they move into a flat. Education courses and family mediation services are also available.

Cheque presentation to Edward House

A group of members from Central Birmingham Club recently visited Edward House where Past President Sandra Brew presented a cheque on behalf of the Club.

Edward Trust was founded in memory of Edward, an eight year old boy who died from cancer in 1988. Edward House provides accommodation for families during their child's treatment at Birmingham Children's Hospital so that seriously ill children will have the comfort of knowing that their family is close by.

There are 36 bedrooms, self-catering kitchens, a laundry room, dining rooms, playrooms, lounge, resource and information room and garden. Each room has a direct telephone link to the wards enabling immediate contact in case of emergencies.Because of the national and international expertise of the medical teams at the Children's Hospital, patients come from all over the country, and a few from abroad.

As well as Edward House, the Trust supports Sunrise - a child bereavement centre offering support to families bereaved of a child and to children bereaved of a parent or significant carer.

Over 3,000 families have been supported by the Trust since the original Edward House opened in 1991.
