Study Day 2008
The UKPAC held a Study Day at the George Fox Complex in Lancaster University on Saturday 5 July 2008. As in previous years, in addition to the plenary sessions with keynote speakers, there were workshops and breakout sessions. More information and a report will shortly be available here.
Jasvinder Sanghera
One of the keynote speakers was Jasvinder Sanghera, author of Shame, the book that has been No. 2 in the best sellers list for a year.
Jasvinder received the Woman of the Year - Window on the World Award last year and this February gave evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee on the subject of forced marriages. She set up and is director of Kirma Nirvana, which offers advice to those enduring forced marriages.
“We don’t know how many girls are bundled off to Pakistan, India and Bangladesh each year, but it is in the thousands. Some 300 girls aged 13-16 have disappeared off the school registers in Bedford alone. So many girls, intimidated or subjected to actual violence as they try to resist their parents’ wishes, don’t know there is help available.”
Theresa May MP
A few weeks ago Theresa May launched a new report on women’s issues. The report, Women in the World Today, outlines key priorities for women in the UK, including issues such as equal pay, flexible work, domestic violence and trafficking.
