SI St Austell and District
The Pyramid of Shoes
SI St Austell built a Pyramid of Shoes at the Eden Project. The club has a very good relationship with Tim Smit (who spoke at the Federation conference in Bournmouth a couple of years ago. He was only too please to allow the Pyramid to take place as the club had helped to campaign in the town when the Eden Project was first muted. Members of staff from the Eden Project were very helpful.
The Pyramid of Shoes was fantastic and the publicity was excellent. There were articles in two local papers, both before the event and, afterwards with photographs. And a club member was interviewed live on Radio Cornwall.
Over 800 pairs of shoes were collected and donated to the Salvation Army and 800 people from all over the UK and from Russia, France, West Indies, Canada and New Zealand, signed the club's anti-cluster bomb petition.
One member kept warm by wearing the cluster bomb suit (kindly loaned by Landmine UK) and walking around the Eden Project talking to the visitors.
Eight club members were attending the Federation conference in Harrogate at the time, but every other club member got involved in one way or another. It took quite a while to plan but it wasn’t until September that they finally got it under way. They had tabards made for club members to wear, a roller banner was displayed and there was a lot of info about Soroptimist.
St Austell is the only club in Cornwall.
This club does not have a website at present
