Fairtrade
Motherwell and Wishaw have been actively involved in the campaign to achieve Fairtrade Status for the Motherwell area – this was awarded in January 2007. Four members are on the Steering group and all members have learned about the problems facing third world producers. They are also involved in ongoing work to produce a Fairtrade Directory. As a result of their involvement, members were invited to attend the launch of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum Strategy in the Scottish Parliament in October. Scotland is hoping to achieve Fair Trade Nation Status within 3 years, so there will be opportunities for other Clubs to get more involved as well.
As a Region we actively supported Scottish International Relief in 2006 / 07 and this support continues through fundraising for Mary’s Meals, providing backpacks (containing essential items such as pencils, paper and a set of clothes) and knitting blankets
In excess of £2,200 has been raised for Mary’s Meals and more than 324 filled backpacks provided. When you consider that £5.30 pays for a meal a day for one child for a year you can see the difference this makes.
The money will be used to provide a daily meal for children attending school in Malawi, Liberia or Uganda. The backpacks provide them with the basics needed to attend school.
Members and friends have been knitting Teddies for Tragedy and now blankets for toddlers. Literally hundreds of these have been produced and are sent to children in many countries.
Saturday of Service
This year many clubs will be supporting Marie Curie Cancer Care by helping collect in Tesco stores. Marie Curie is Tesco’s charity of 2008 and they have set aside the 1st of March as a collection day for them.Other areas of work included organising “dinners’ for Adopt a Minefield, supporting the homeless through starter packs, help for the residents of a women’s hostel and of course support for Women’s Aid. Many shoeboxes were filled for Operation Christmas Child and Blythswood Care and we recycle everything from stamps to mobile phones, shoes to bras!
