The Ghana Education Project
Investing in Education and Training in the community of Nkwanta
Last year SI East Grinstead won the first UKPAC Best Practice Award for their work on the Ghana Education Project. This is a registered UK charity looking to support the development of education and associated infrastructure in Nkwanta.
The club has worked in partnership with the Ghana Education Project and with other partners: eg Barclay’s Bank, several primary and secondary schools and businesses. This has involved the club in sponsorship activities, sales of goods, collecting stationery, books, art materials and sports equipment, computers and bicycles! All of which filled a shipping container and have contributed to Nkwanta schools, hospitals and the Kyabobo Arts, Sports and Culture Centre.
East Grinstead Soroptimists have a member on the business committee and continue to raise funds through a pin badge scheme they have initiated in addition to raffles, sales and events, which now contribute to the building and equipping of a new girl’s school.
GEP began in 1997 as a small charity registered as TWGGS Ghana in association with Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School; with teams of girls working together to raise money for the project in the UK and then travelling to Nkwanta to help in the local community.
